State program

Massachusetts Research Credit

A permanent, uncapped credit that is a cornerstone of the state's life sciences and technology economy.

Program Overview

Massachusetts offers a permanent research credit with no annual statewide cap, applying the federal Section 41 framework to research conducted in the Commonwealth. The credit may offset the first tranche of corporate excise fully and a large share of the remainder, and unused credits carry forward for fifteen years, or indefinitely in some circumstances. Companies certified under the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center programs may access additional refundable incentives layered on top of the base credit.

Eligibility

Business corporations subject to Massachusetts corporate excise with qualified research expenses for research conducted in Massachusetts.

Benefits

Non-refundable credit against corporate excise with a long carryforward; life sciences certified companies may access refundable variants.
